Marz February Premier Toy Auction
Lot 316:
This is the Tammany Bank “Little Fat Man” cast iron mechanical bank, designed by John Hall for J. & E. Stevens. An authentic antique, it is approximately 120 years old. This variation features a character with black hair, eyebrows, and mustache, a clean flesh-colored face and hands, and a dark blue bow tie, white shirt, yellow vest, black jacket and shoes, and gray pants. The bank sits on a tan “half scallop shell” chair with orange trim. Inscribed on the sides of the chair are “Halls Pat’d” and “Tammany Bank, ” with “Pat’d Dec. 28, 1873” cast along the back trim. The bank has a weighted mechanism that works as intended. When a coin is placed in the character’s hand, it is "pocketed" while the figure bows in a gesture of appreciation. This mechanical action is in excellent working condition. The bank displays original wear, with proper chipping, darkening, and a beautiful aged patina, but is free of cracks and operates smoothly. Please note, it is missing its trap. The bank measures approximately 2.75" W x 4" D x 5.75" H.
