Although Jean Marie Phalibois was listed as a cardboard box factory worker in Paris city directories from 1863, his firm became one of France’s leading automaton manufacturers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Phalibois created both small and life-sized automata, including this rare and delicate “Musical Trio” circa 1875. His designs reflected the trends of the time, with meticulous attention to sounds, fabrics, music, and movement. Does work but very slowly. No music.
