Spring Toy Auction Extravaganza
Lot 324:
Description
Shepard Hardware cast iron Speaking Dog mechanical bank. When the lever near the dog is pressed, the girl’s arm lifts to drop the coin from the tray into the seat opening beside her, while the dog’s mouth opens and its tail wags. Shepard Hardware manufactured these banks beginning around 1882 before selling the line in 1892. Shepard versions are identifiable by their rectangular locking traps, unlike the round traps used by Stevens. This example is missing its trap but retains original paint and has been tested and works. Approximately 7.75" L x 3.25" D x 7.25" H.
