Lot 287:
Description
Punch & Judy cast iron mechanical bank, circa 1885, made by Shepard Hardware Company. This is the desirable large-letter variation of the three styles produced. The bank features a painted street theater scene with Punch swinging a club at Judy. When the round plunger on the right side is pulled, Judy turns forward and Punch raises his club. A coin placed in Judy’s tray is deposited when the small lever under the plunger is pressed—Judy turns toward Punch while he lowers his club, and the coin drops into the bank. Money is removed by unscrewing the base plate. The pediment reads "PUNCH AND JUDY BANK" and the coin box plate is inscribed “BUFFALO. N.Y.–U.S.A. / PAT’D IN U.S. JULY 15. ’84 / AND JULY 22. ’84. / R’D IN ENGLAND / NO. 10423.” This example retains all original paint and measures approximately 7.5" H.
