Lot 289:
Description
This is a Hubley No. 828 cast iron mechanical Trick Dog Bank, ca. 1930s. Its design is based on an 1888 patent by New Jersey inventor Daniel Cooke. The bank operates by placing a coin in the dog’s mouth, then pressing a lever on the base to release a latch and launch the dog through a hoop held by a clown. The dog springs forward and deposits the coin into a cast iron barrel. The dog is then reset by pulling back its body and lever arm to latch it into place. The figure features a white face with red and yellow highlights, black boots, and dark clothing, while the base is painted soft blue with gold trim. This bank is all original except for the missing trap; a blue metal plate has been added where the trap should be. It measures approximately 8.75" L x 2.75" W x 7.5" H.
