Description

A c. 1900s “Dinah” cast iron mechanical bank, similar to a type of coin bank produced by John Harper & Co., Ltd., England, No. 153. This female version of the popular hand-operated mechanical bank is marked “DINAH” on the back with gold-colored earrings, a large grinning mouth, exaggerated nose, brow and cheeks, curly hair, and red eyes that rotate back into the skull when a coin is deposited. Imprinted below the name “Dinah” is the registered trademark number “RdNo 501285.” To operate, place a coin in the palm of Dinah’s hand and raise the arm to her mouth by pushing the lever at the opposite shoulder; as the coin slips into the gaping mouth, the eyes roll back and the tongue slides back. This example has been tested and was found to be working. The back retains three screws—two at the ears and one at the bottom—and the bottom grate is intact and removable. There are signs of age and normal rust, otherwise it presents nicely. It measures approximately 6.5" H with a 4" x 4.5" base.
