The James Gillespie Estate Soldiers & Cast Iron Toys Auction
Fourteen authentic vintage hand-painted metal military miniatures and semi-flat pinback figures are offered together, highlighted by a marching tactical squad of the historic Spanish Legion, or La Legion, manufactured by Hiriart. The solid lead marching figures measure approximately 5 cm H and include a standard bearer carrying a red-and-yellow Spanish national flag, an officer with a sword and map case, a bugler, and six infantrymen wearing characteristic light greenish-grey open-neck uniforms with suspenders and marching with rifles shouldered and fixed bayonets. The military miniatures are paired with five small semi-flat metal military uniform figures measuring approximately 4.5 cm H and fitted with functional mounting pins on their reverses. These include a sailor in a white-and-blue dress uniform, a winter-clad infantryman with a rifle, an officer in a blue double-breasted service jacket, a pilot or motorist in a tan jumpsuit with a sheepskin collar, and a field-grey infantry soldier carrying a rifle. The entire lot is preserved in very good condition overall, displaying vibrant original paintwork, with only two figures showing minor paint nicks from handling.
