The James Gillespie Estate Soldiers & Cast Iron Toys Auction
Two matching J. & E. Stevens Co. "Burglarproof House Safe No. 40" cast iron combination banks are offered together, one retaining a gold-plated finish and the other a nickel-plated finish. Each features a front-hinged circular combination dial door embossed "BURGLARPROOF HOUSE SAFE, " while the perforated base plates are marked "The J. & E. Stevens Co., Cromwell, Conn., Patd Aug 17, 1897." The relief details on the silver bank appear to have been overpainted silver. No combinations are provided. Each measures approximately 5" L x 4" W x 6" H.
