The Premier Firearms & Militaria Auction
Lot 55:
Description
Extremely rare Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. large frame Navy pistol, chambered in .41 Volcanic “Rocket Ball, ” manufactured circa 1854. Approximately 500 large frame Navy models were produced; this example is limited production number 98. The serial number appears to be 86? (last digit indistinct) and is marked under the grips, on the trigger guard lever, and on each grip. Recognized as the first lever-action firearm design and a predecessor to later Smith & Wesson lever actions and the Henry rifle, this pistol features a tubular loading system with lever-actuated elevator. The lever action functions properly, raising the loading ramp; the trigger and hammer engage correctly, and the loading spring operates as intended. The barrel is correctly marked “THE VOLCANIC / REPEATING ARMS CO / PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN FEB 14. 1854.” The barrel retains very faint traces of bluing and has mostly turned brown. The frame shows minor dents and dings, with traces of fire bluing on the screws. The grips retain glossy varnish with minor denting at the butt. The barrel measures 8". | Manufacturer: The Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. | Model: Large Frame Navy | Serial #: 86? | Type: Pistol | Caliber/Gauge: .41 Volcanic | Barrel Length: 8" | Condition/Grade: Good, Approximately 70% |
