The James Gillespie Estate Soldiers & Cast Iron Toys Auction
A J. & E. Stevens Co. cast iron No. 230 Tammany Bank mechanical bank, also known as the "Little Fat Man, " depicts Boss William Macy Tweed, the notorious New York political figure of the 1860–70s. This original bank features a mechanism in which a coin is placed in the man’s hand and deposited into the bank. The mechanism was tested during cataloging and found to be working, but the head does not nod during operation. "Tammany Bank" is cast in on both sides. The armchair is painted red and cream, while Tweed wears dark gray pants, a black jacket, a yellow vest, a white shirt, and a navy bow tie. The trap is present. It measures approximately 2.75" W x 5.75" H.
